INJURIES LEAVE ANCELOTTI WITH JUST SIX PLAYERS

From 23 to 8

N. LUZ | S. FERNÁNDEZ. LISBON | MADRID 11/12/2013
Carlo Ancelotti has been left threadbare this week by the international games. Fifteen of his players have been called up to play for their national sides and the coach is left with just eight of his first team players: the two goalkeepers Diego López and Jesús, Marcelo, Nacho, Illaramendi, Isco, Casemiro and Jesé.
Out of this bunch, two of them are unable to train as normal due to injury. Marcelo is recovering from traumatic arthritis in his left knee and Jesé is suffering from back problems.
The squad does not return to the training ground until tomorrow and the Italian will turn to the youth categories again to make up the numbers. Amongst the internationals, Carlo will be keeping a particularly close eye on the players who are playing in the play-offs. The Italian is well aware that the majority of injuries sustained since the season began have not occurred during club commitments, but as a result of the FIFA virus.
The clearest example of this is the case of Coentrao. His latest setback, a sprained ankle, occurred in Vallecas, but before that he suffered a muscle injury with his national team. Now that he has recovered at the Valdebebas training complex, he will join Paulo Bento's ranks and continue with his recovery.
